Chad Young Foundation Scholarship
About the Chad William Young Foundation Scholarship
Chad William Young was both a scholar and an athlete. He had an infectious smile, always an encouraging thought, driven in all aspects of his life and LIVED life to the absolute fullest. He lived every moment. A tenacious work ethic, he took advantage of all opportunities afforded him. His philosophy was anything worth achieving was worth working for and applied it to both his studies and training with the same vigor. Chad began cycling as a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas high school and then quickly moved through the ranks from Category 5 rider through Category 1 and on to the professional ranks. In addition to St. Thomas Aquinas, he also rode for CCB, Hot Tubes, USA Cycling and the Colorado School of Mines as well as Raleigh Bikes in Cyclocross. At the 2015 USA National Road Cycling Championships in California he earned Top 10 rankings in two events. He also fit in a full time job as an engineering intern in between his training schedule in preparation for the national championship. That achievement earned him a spot as a stagiaire on the 2015 U23 Axeon Hagens Berman Development Cycling Team. He was signed on as a full-time rider for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Chad maintained the same level of enthusiasm and accomplishments in his studies. He graduated in the Top 10 of the St. Thomas class of 2013 where he received the class Chemistry award as well as a 3-time French department award recipient. He was a full time student at Colorado School of Mines pursuing a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree. While attending Mines, he had a near perfect GPA. He displayed the same passion discussing his latest design projects as he would his latest training ride or his last race. He was passionate about the transportation industry and eager to apply his education in designing the transportation solutions of tomorrow. Sadly, Chad’s life was cut way too short as he succumbed to a traumatic brain injury sustained in an accident on the last stage of the Tour of the Gila, a five day stage race for professional cyclists, held in the Gila National Forest and mountain range in New Mexico. Chad passed away on April 28th, 2017. Chad is most remembered for his humble nature, his kindness to others, his intense focus and maturity beyond his years. He was fortunate to have many great mentors both academically and athletically in his life and was just as eager to pay it forward. His quiet leadership, intelligence and demeanor always noticed - a friend to many, fondly remembered and deeply loved. Scholarship Criteria:

Paige Family Foundation
The Herbert and Judy Paige Family Foundation Current Use Scholarship Fund was established by Herbert and Judy Paige Family Foundation. Herbert and Judy Paige both grew up in modest, working-class communities in New York City. Thanks to a football scholarship, Herb was able to attend the College of William and Mary where he received his degree in business administration and studied under professors he considered mentors. Herb was exposed to many new educational experiences and ways of thinking, all of which helped him to develop the skills for lifelong success. The opportunity to attend college in Virginia made possible by the scholarship greatly impacted Herb for the rest of his life. He was always grateful that someone believed in his potential, and he carried with him the knowledge that schooling was the key to opened opportunities. Both he and Judy firmly believe that no person should be denied the opportunity for a quality education because of economic disadvantage and determined to fulfill this mission during their lifetimes and beyond.
The Herbert and Judy Paige Family Foundation was founded in June 2000 and focuses on helping low-income students gain access to high-quality education, to provide food, love and shelter for animals and to ensure low-income seniors have necessary healthcare, transportation, housing and food. Peiker, Edwin Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Edwin W, Peiker Jr Memorial Scholarship was established by Sue Peiker, Edwin Peiker's wife.
Eligibility Requirements
Edwin Peiker Bio: Ed Peiker was born on November 10, 1931 in Denver Colorado where he grew up and graduated from South High School in 1950. Ed attended the Colorado School of Mines and graduated with a Geological Engineer degree. After graduating, Ed spent time as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and served in Germany. Newly stateside, Ed took on a faculty position at the University of Colorado in engineering. Once there, he rekindled an old friendship, fanned the flames, and took a bride, Sue Carswell, whom he had known while studying at the School of Mines. With a new family to support, Ed worked days at CU and studied in the evenings to earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering and complete coursework for a PhD. With a growing brood, Ed went to work in the mining industry and had a long and successful career. Early on, he spent years working for AMAX developing global molybdenum deposits. Later, like many, he was downsized and became an independent consultant. He worked through tough times and culminated his career as the COO of Royal Gold. In his career, Ed travelled far and wide, visiting over 80 countries and all 7 continents. At the opening of China to trade relations with the United States, Ed was one of the first business representatives to work to develop relations. On his many travels to China, he used to take an entire suitcase of Polaroid film to take pictures of the children and people he met to leave with them as gifts. This was so well received that Polaroid made a commercial of the story. During his travels, he also amassed an awesome airline silverware collection and was able to bequeath his grandchildren an impressive currency collection. Ed enjoyed living and raising a family in Colorado. He often spent free time with the family in the out of doors untying knotted fishing line, carrying children on hiking trails, warming cold feet in ski lodges, and otherwise adventuring in the Ford Ranch Wagon. He even found time to climb a good many of Colorado's Fourteeners. A walk through the back yard from the root cellar to the working, full scale mining railroad is a testament to Ed's many interests and passions including geology, mining, Colorado history, and railroads. Over the years, the backyard also hosted a menagerie including ducks, geese, chickens, dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, and the odd guinea hen. Away from home, Ed was involved in a variety of charitable activities including donating time at the Colorado State Capital, the Colorado Historical Society, and the Railroad Museum. He was also an active supporter of the Colorado School of Mines and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. At his death, Ed was survived by his wife Sue, three children, and four grandchildren. 302172, 302408 |

Transfer Match COSI Scholarship
Signed into law on June 6, 2014, the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) was created to address the Colorado Paradox, the state’s high proportion of adults with college degrees is due to credentialed migrants moving in instead of reflecting an educated homegrown workforce. COSI would expand the use of best practices throughout the state through a funding model that received bi-partisan approval. By leveraging state funds to generate local giving, the program grows community efforts and engages private donors to increase available scholarships well beyond the investment from the state. Knowing that scholarships must be paired with student supports to impact completion rates, the program’s Matching Student Scholarship (MSS) component complements the Community Partner Program (CPP) grants. By reaching students from a range of socio-economic classes (from 0-250 percent Pell-eligible) underserved students, for whom college seems out-of-reach, are able to not only afford a degree but also access the support they need to persist and graduate.
For more information please visit the COSI website. These funds are matched by the Harvey Family Foundation. Scholarship Requirements:
